Description Incidents of intense red tides in the coastal waters of Goa, west coast of India (73 degrees 30 minutes - 73 degrees 50 minutes E and 15 degrees 20 minutes - 15 degrees 40 minutes N) during September 1973, May 1977 and February-April 1987 were studied. The red tides were caused by @iNoctiluca scintillans@@ (Macartney), which ranged in concentration from 51.36 to 1004 x 10@u6@@ cells m@u-3@@ during different seasons. Unlike the 1973 and 1977 red tides which imparted pink and orange colouration respectively, the 1987 one was green due to the presence of the flagellate @iPedinomonas noctilucae@@ (Subr.) Sweeney inside @iNoctiluca@@. This red tide extended over 600 km on the central west coast of India and prevailed intermittently for more than three months. Although the earlier two red tides did not provide any direct evidence of fish mortality, the 1987 one was followed by a substantial fall in fish catch. The prevailing environmental conditions and the probable impact on the fisheries during such red tides are discussed
