Description High resolution seismic data over the continental shelf off Ongole to Paradip, east coast of India (14 degrees 30 minutes N to 12 degrees 30 minutes N) indicates that the seismic stratigraphy within the top 100 metres of the continental shelf comprises mainly of three units i) a chaotic facies representing the top surface of an Early Pleistocene sedimentary sequence, ii) a layered sedimentary sequence of parallel to subparallel reflectors (30 to 80 m in thickness), the top surface of it representing an erosional unconformity formed during a Late Pleistocene sea level regression and iii) a top layer of Holocene unconsolidated sediments. The erosional unconformity of the second unit represents a palaeoshelf which is outcropped over the present outer-shelf from Pudimadaka in the south to Kalingapatnam in the north and is overlain by the unconsolidated sediments further south and north. The exposed palaeoshelf, particularly over the outer-shelf off Visakhapatnam is capped by calcareous reefs/mounds and pinnacles formed in a shallow water environment during the Holocene transgression. The outer edge of the palaeoshelf is associated with a dome shaped reef and an abrupt vertical fault and forms an ancient shoreline parallel to the present coastline from Ongole in the south to Puri in the north. This generalized stratigraphic sequence is masked by a thick sequence of deltaic sediments off Krishnna and Godavari rivers in the south and Mahanadi river in the north
