Description |
Article deals with an evaluation of the levels of contamination of various organochlorine pesticides such as DDTs, HCHs, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, and different congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls in different compartment of the ocean (water, sediment and biota). It provides the method analysis for determination of the concentration of various chlorinated hydrocarbons. The most striking feature of this article is the delineation of a comprehensive map of the residue levels of various organochlorine pesticides such as total-ddt, aldrin, dieldrin and HCH in sediments along the east and west coasts of India. The different congeners of PCBs detected in sediments along the east coast of India are cb-14, cb-16, cb-29, ch-31, cb-28, cb-66, cb-99, cb-101, cb-119, cb-153 and cb-138. Altogether 31 congeners of PCBs (namely cb-26, cb-28, cb-42, cb-44, cb-49, cb-60, cb-70, cb-97, cb-99, cb-101, cb-105, cb-116, cb-118 are reported to be present in the zooplankton from the Arabian Sea. The concentration of different organochlorine pesticides in fishes, seals from the Indian Ocean are also reported
