Description Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of wastewaters and nature of anthropogenic pollutants entering coastal waters are discussed. Site spcific information and field data acquisition through planned studies for selection of location for release of wastewater in nearshore waters are also examined. The methodologies are applied to make probabilistic assessment of the Amba river estuary to assimilate treated wastewater from a petrochemical complex. The data base emerged through detailed field studies involving tides, currents, circulation, flushing characteristics, water quality and biological characteristics is utilized to suggest suitable location for release of treated wastewater into the estuary
