Description |
A preliminary study has been made for trace element (Mg) in the test of benthic species Bulimina exilis from a shallow sediment core (at 22 m water depth) off west coast of India using Electron Probe Microanalyser (EPMA) The Mg content is selected because certain culture studies show that intake of Mg in foraminiferal tests depends upon the salinity the down core profile of Mg content of Bulimina exilis shows a low content below ca 3.00m in the core whereas, above this level Mg content shows an increasing trend Such a distinct response of Mg content is in agreement with the already established climatic boundary around 3,500 years BP (at 3.00 m core depth linked with salinity changes at core site) Therefore, it is possible to use trace element (Mg) in the composition of foraminiferal tests as an indicator of salinity fluctuations which in coastal regions will have significant bearing in the reconstruction of palcomonsoonal history
