Description |
Stainless steel is extensively used in the food industry for various processing equipment applications due to its versatility and its resistance to corrosion. Fabrication of stainless steel for food processing applications and how processing design criteria are met during manufacture of stainless steel food processing equipment are discussed. Aspects considered include: fabrication techniques; forming; welding (tungsten inert gas welding, metal inert gas welding); welding of dissimilar materials (explosive, ultrasonic and diffusion welding); fabrication of vessels and pipework; pipe cutting and surface preparation; post-weld and stress relief treatments for stainless steel; quality assurance of welds; surface treatments and insulation of stainless steel; and cost considerations of using stainless steel.
