Description The size distribution of cell aggregates, and effect of aggregate size on anthocyanin content were studied in Daucus carota (carrot) cell suspension cultures. Results indicated that >92% of biomass was present in aggregates of 500-1500 mum diam. Anthocyanin content increased with increases in cell aggregate diam. up to 500-850 mum, but decreased rapidly with increases in aggregate size above this critical diam. Conversely, surface colour intensity increased steadily with increases in cell aggregate size, indicating that anthocyanins are accumulated at the outer surfaces of larger cell aggregates.
