Description The performance of thermotolerant Kluyveromyces fragilis NCIM 3358 was compared with that of Saccharomyces cerevisiae NRRL-Y-132 in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of lignocellulosic wastes (sugar cane leaves and Antigonum leptopus leaves) using Trichoderma reesei cellulase (Celluclast(R)). The yield of ethanol in the SSF process was higher with K. fragilis (2.5-3.5%, w/v) than with S. cerevisiae (2.0-2.5%, w/v). These yields could be improved further by supplementation of cellulase with beta-glucosidase (Novozym 188). In terms of the rate of conversion of wastes to ethanol, A. leptopus leaves were a better substrate than sugar cane leaves, although not as good as the reference compound (Solka floc SW-0 microcrystalline cellulose). It is concluded that the lignocellulosic wastes examined represent good substrates for ethanol production by SSF using the thermotolerant K. fragilis strain.
