Description Thymine and cytosine as well as the intermediates in pyrimidine biosynthetm
pathway dihydroorotic acid, erotic acid, earbamyl aspartate and 5'-uridine monophosphato
counteracted the toxic effect of aflatoxin in Bacillus megaterium. Folio acid and aminopterin
counteracted the effect even better. The synergistic effect of thymine or 5'-uridlne monophosphate
and relic acid, was synergistic. 2-14C-Thymine, 6-1aC-orotic acid and 14C-formate but not 2-14Curacil,
were incorporated into DNA more in the presence of aflatoxin. These findings indicated
that aflatoxin inhibited the pyrimidine base synthesis which could be overcome to a great extent
by the addition of thymine and folic acid to aflatoxin-treated cells.
