Description |
Garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an important cool season vegetable crop grownthroughout the world. It is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region and is eaten as fresh, canned, frozen or in dehydrated forms. Besides containing high digestible proteins, it is also a rich source of carbohydrates, vitamins and essential minerals. Globally, pea is grown in an area of 9,42,000 ha with an annual production of 73,07,000 metric tons and in India it is cultivated in an area of 2,50,000 ha with an annual production of 20,00,000 metric tons (FAD, 2002). Pea has a tremendous export potential as fresh and processed vegetable and is exported primarily to Ukraine, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Gulf countries. The major pea growing states in India are U.P., Assam, Rajasthan,Punjab, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana (Singhal, 2003), where it is grown on a commercial scale. Peas are grown throughout the Himalayan ranges all the year round. Peas produced between April-November fetch premium price in the plains. In Himachal Pradesh, the crop is grown in an area of about 9,505 ha with an annual production of 90,480 metric tons(Anonymous, 2003) and holds a very coveted position as a leading off-season vegetable especially in high hills. |
