Description |
Ginger or Adrak (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) of commerce is the underground stem or rhizome of the Zingiberous herbaceous plant, which constitutes one of the five most important major spices of India, standing third or fourth, (competing with chillies) depending upon fluctuations in world market prices and world demand and supply position (Pruthi, 1998). It has a prime position on the export front and among spices as it is next only to cardamom and black pepper in export earnings (Vijuipe, 1991). Besides being an export earner it provides reasonable returns to the growers in the local market. India, China, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Taiwan, Thailand, Nigeria and Australia are the main producers of ginger (Pruthi, 1998). In fact, India still enjoys the unique position of being the largest producer (with an area of 63,000 hectares and production of 1.97 lakh tonnes) of ginger in the world and contribute about 50 per cent to the total world production (Peter, 1999). |
