Description |
Pea (Pisum sativua L.) is one of the principal vegetable/pulse crops grown in almost all parts of India. It is consumed as a vegetable in the form of unripe pods and also as a pulse in the form of dry seeds. Pea seeds are rich in proteins (15.5-39.7%) and the proteins are of a superior quality due to their higher lysine content (Monti,1983). Peas also contain good amounts of sugar, vitamins and minerals (Cherian,et al.,1955). The crop is cultivated on 10.47 million hectares in the world and in India its cultivation covers an area of about 0.98 million hectares (FAO,1993). In Himachal Pradesh, it is an important vegetable cash crop grown in an area of about 64335 hectares'L with 57,538 tons of green podproduction perannum (Anonymous,1988). Diverse agro-climatic conditions enable the farmers to grow pea crop throughout the year resulting in very good economic returns to them.
