Description Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple food crop of the world and especially of South-East Asian countries. Amongst the rice growing countries of the world, lndia has the highest area under this crop (42,200 thousand hectares) and stand second in production (122,262 thousand tonnes) (Anonymous, 1998). About 40 per cent of rice cultivated in lndia is grown as direct seeded crop in which upland rice comprises 16 per cent (Sinhababu et al., 1992) where the productivity of rice is very low (0.5-0.6 tonnes per hectare). Besides this, sowing pre-germinated seeds on puddled soil is also gaining importance and expected to occupy 20 to 25 per cent of the total area (Murthy et al., 1993).
