Description |
Flowers have always remained an integral part of the social fabric of human life. Traditionally, flowers in lndia were used for religious purposes and adornments by women, implying demands for only loose flowers. However, in recent times, the increase in per capita income, changing habits, improved standards and styles of living have contributed to the increasing demand for cut flowers. Floriculture has become an important source of income and beautification in indoor and outdoor arrangements. The per capita consumption of flowers is going up around the world. The trade in international market is estimated to be 40 billion US dollars (Rs. 1,25,000 crore) of which cut flowers account for nearly 60 per cent i.e. 25 billion US dollars (Rs. 80,000 crore). The world floriculture trade is still controlled by Holland having a lions share of 67 per cent to its credit (Prasad and Kumar, 1998).
