Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a major cash crop and is widely grown throughout the world with production of 98,622 thousand million tonnes in an area of 3,644 thousand hectares. In India, it occupies an area of 365 thousand hectares with a production of 5,500 thousand million tonnes (FAO, 2001). In Himachal Pradesh tomato is grown extensively as a cash crop in an area of about 6,000 hectares with a production of about 2,07,870 tonnes (Anonymous, 2000-2001).
