Description |
Mango, Mangifera indica,Linnaeus, the king of fruits, is grown in India for over 6000 years and is indigenous to Indo-Malayan region (Dhutani, 1979). It is now cultivated in all tropical and sub-tropical countries, over an area of 3371401 ha with a production of about 25754509 MT (FAO, 2002) Mango has a premier status among the commercial fruits cultivated in India, covering an area of 1500000 ha with production of 11400000 MT (FAO, 2002). The valleys, mid and low hill are suitable to grow mango, thus playing a significant role in transforming the economy of orchardists. It is grown over an area of 29800 ha with a production of 16900 MT in Himachal Pradesh (Anonymous, 1999).
