Description |
India has diverse agro-climatic conditions that enabled her to produce a wide variety of horticultural crops. Amongst these crops, apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) occupies a prominent position in India and covers nearly 2.6 per cent of the total area under cultivation. It accounts for about 90 per cent of the total temperate fruit production (Chadha, 2001). It is estimated that the annual production of apple world over is about 60 million tonnes of which China and India are contributing 20 million tonnes and 1.4 million tonnes, respectively (FAO, 2003). Apple cultivation is one of the major industries of H.P. and had contributed more than 45 per cent of the total Indian apple production during 2000-2001 (Anbnymous, 2001).
