Description |
Man and forest have always co-existed since time immemorial. But the increasing human population has put a lot of pressure on forests. India with 15 per cent of worlds' population possesses about 2 per cent of the worlds' total forest area (Anonymous 1986a), spreading over 67 million ha. These forests are mostly under-stocked and more than half of these are unproductive. The remaining forests are-1 being lost at the rate of 1.5 million ha year to meet industrial commitments as well as due to other biotic pressures. Recent satellite pictures have depicted that forest area is hardly 12 per cent in India (Vohra,1988).
