Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) a member of family Solanaceae is one of the most important vegetable crops and earns the price patronage worldover. In India, tomato is number one vegetable crop and occupies an area of 3,21,000 hectares with a total production of 46,03,446 MT (FAO, 1995). The scenario of tomato production in India has tremendously changed over the past decade with increasing dominance of hybrid varieties in commercial cultivation. The value of tomato hybrids depends upon their adaptability to a particular agroclimatic region, tolerance/resistance to major pests of the region besides, bearing high yield potential and superior quality. |
