| Description |
The commercial cultivation of stone fruits started in India only in the beginning of this century. A substantial increase in the area under these fruits has, however, taken place only during the last 3-4 decades. According to an estimate, the total area under stone fruit orchards in India was 6,872 hectares in 1969-70 which has risen to 23,649 hectares in 1984-85 (Anonymous, 1985).
