Description |
Onion (Allium cepa L.) a member of the family amaryllidaceae is one of the most important bulbous crop and ranks next to tomato in the world production amongst the vegetable crops. It is taken raw as salad and used for seasoning of a wide variety of dishes for making soups and pickles. It is grown throughout India covering an area of about 2.4 lakh hectares and accounts for about 93 per cent of the total export of vegetables (Singh et al. 1976).
