Description |
The fungal pathogen Phytophthora cactorum (Leb. and Cohn) Schroet., the causal organism of crown rotlcollar rot of apple has been studied extensively during last one hundred years ever since it was found associated with apple and pear during the year 1875 by Lebert and Cohn. Thereafter, Kleban i'n 1909 reported the species of Phytophthora namely, P. cactorum and P. syringae as the causal organisms of apple fruit rot (Butler and Jones, 1961). Since then P. cactorum has been observed to be the causal agent of rots in several fruits throughout the world (Osterwalder, 1906, Rose and Lindegren, 1925).
