Description |
The cultivated apple (Malus x domestics Borkh.) is native to South Western Asia (Brown, 1975). There is hardly any region in temperate climate where apple is not grown on commercial scale. In India, it was introduced in Kullu valley around 1870 (Kanwar, 1987) and at Kotgarh in 1918 (Hayes, 1957) by European settlers and missionaries. It is a prime commercial fruit crop of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and UP hills and is also grown in North-East on limited scale. Total area under apple cultivation in 1995-96 in India was 217099 hectares with a production of 121 1379 metric tonnes (Chauhan et al., 1997). In Himachal Pradesh the area during 1995-96 was 76292 ha with a production of 276681 metric tonnes. In Kullu district, the apple cultivation has been taken up on commercial scale and it is major cash crop of the area. Out of a total area of 23004 ha under various fruits in this district, the apple has 17541 ha and production is 48604 metric tonnes out of 60478 metric tonnes of all fruits (Anonymous, 1996a).
