Description The cultivated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.; 2n=2x=24) is relatively recent addition to the world's food crop list. It has originated in Peruvian and Mexican regions (Tigchelaar, 1986). It was perhaps introduced in India by the Portuguese although there is no definite record of when and how it came to India. Of late, it has been one of the most popular and widely consumed vegetable and earns prized patronage world over. In India, it is a prime vegetable and occupies an area of 0.33 million hectare with productivity of 15.15 tonnes/ha (FAO, 1997) while in Himachal Pradesh tomato is presently being cultivated over 2570 ha with a total production of 79057 tomes (Anonymous, 1996).
