Apple (Malus domestics Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit crops of the world. In India, it is extensively cultivated on the north western hill regions covering the major areas like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and hilly parts of Uttar Pradesh, with an estimated production of 1238 thousand metric tonnes (FAO, 1996). In Himachal Pradesh, estimated apple production is 288538 metric tonnes over an area of 78292 ha (Anonymous, 1997).
