Description |
Okra (Abelntoschus esculenfzis (L.) Moench) is an important warm season fruit vegetable belonging to the family Malvaceae (Chaudhary, 1979). It has become an extensively cultivated crop in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the world. In India, commonly known as 'Bhindi' or 'Ladys'finger' and christened in Sansknt as 'Tridisha' and 'Gandhmula' it is one of the most common and principal vegetable crops being grown all the year round. Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench is one of the three cultivated species of the genus Abelmoschus, grown commercially, the other two being Abelmoschus Manihot (L.) Medikus and Abelmoschus moschatus Medikus. Okra is known to be originated from Ethiopia (South Africa) (Vavilov, 1951). Some recent reports cite it to be of African or Asiatic origin (Markosa and Peter, 1990).
