Description Kalazeera Bunium persicum (Boiss.) Fedtsch is a prized medicinal, spice and condiment as well as aromatic plant, yielding the seed spice Kalazeera. It has been found growing wild at altitudes ranging between 2000-3000 m above mean sea level in the Western Himalayan region, extending upto Baluchistan and Afghanistan (Bhartiya, 1967). It is a perennial herb which is distributed in dry temperate zone and restricted to the mountains. Kalazeera is found in high altitude regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttranchal. High altitude regions of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Pangi and Bharmour in Himachal Pradesh and Paddar valley of Jammu and Kashmir are the potential areas of its production in India (Panwar et al., 1993).
