Description |
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) belonging to family Solanaceae is one of the major tuber crops of the world, especially in Europe and America; and most important commercial vegetable vis-a-vis food crop grown in India. South America is considered as the native place of potato, from where it has spread to other parts of the world. A distinctive characteristic of potato is due to presence of high quality starch, proteins, vitamins and minerals which accounts for its use as vegetable and food. Potato ranks as the fourth major food crop of the world. India occupies the fifth place in production and fourth in area in the world.
