Description |
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) is one of the most important and widely grown cole crops in the world due to its delicious taste, flavour and nutrition. Cabbage is said to be native of Asia Minor (De Candolle, 1883) but rich diversity is also found in Western Europe. The major cabbage growing countries are former USSR, China, Japan, Korea, India, USA and Poland (FAO, 1998). It originated from the cliff cabbages (Brassica oleracea var. sylvestris), those were growing along the coasts of Mediterranean sea. Cabbage possesses many medicinal properties (Brown and Hutchison, 1949). The American Cancer Society and National Research Council have recommended liberal consumption of cabbage to avert the incidence of cancer in human beings (Birt, 1988).
