Description Livestock is an essential component of farming systems in India. The animal production systems in the country, which consists of nearly 15 per cent of world's livestock population occupying 2 per cent of the world geographical area is linked with the forage production system spread in less than 4 per cent of cultivated land under cultivable forage crops and 40 per cent non-arable land which are being used for grazing animals. The country has about 490 million livestock population (Anonymous, 2001) out of which cattle occupies the major share of 214.8 m followed by goat and sheep 180.1 m and buffaloes 95.1 m (Pandey, 1995).
