| Description |
In India the Himalaya hill and mountain ecosystem extends over twelve states from Jammu and Kashmir in the North-West to Nagaland in the North-East and is about 2800 km long and 222 to 300 km wide. It covers a total area of about 591 thousand sq. km inhabiting nearly 5 1 million people and accounts for 18 per cent and 6 per cent of area and population of the country, respectively. The region is endowed with diverse agro-climatic conditions, which permit the successful production of all kinds of fruits (temperate to sub-tropical) and vegetables (off-season to exotic).
