Tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. is an important vegetable crop grown all over the world for fresh market consumption and processing, ranking second in importance to potato in many countries (Tiwari and Chowdhery, 1993). It occupies an area of 4,311 thousand hectares with an annual production of 1,13,308 thousand metric tones in the world whereas in India, the total area under tomato cultivation is 520 thousand hectares and the annual production is 7,420 thousand metric tones (Anonymous, 2003a).
