Pear has long been considered a highly treasured fruit, both in East and West. It is an important fruit crop, after apple, among temperate fruits in the world. China produces nearly 60 per cent of the world's pear with an expected production of 11.2 million tonnes during 2005-06. The total pear production in the world is 19.5 million tonnes (Anonymous 2006).
