The apple (Malus domestica L. Borkh.) is undoubtedly the most important species of temperate tree fruit crops in the world. In India, it is mainly grown in the three northwestern Himalayan States viz., Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and hill districts of Uttar Pradesh. The region infact provides for almost the entire requirement of temperate fruits in the country and horticulture is the mainstay of economy of the people of these states.
