Description |
Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik. 2n = 14) is one of the oldest protein rich food legume crops, having probable progenitor L. orientalis with Mediterranean as the center of genetic diversity (Zohari, 1972 and Ladizinsky, 1979a) . From there it moved west and eastward and presently grown in an area about 3.04 million hectares in the world, mainly in the semi-arid region of Middle East, Northern Africa, Central and Western Asia and North South Africa. The countries of the Indian Sub-continent alone (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) accounts for about 38 per cent of the world production.
