India grow's a variety of pulse crops, namely, urd, mung, cowpeas, 'Kulthie, 'moth, etc., and during Khari'f 1987-88 these occupied an area of 6,976.7 thousand hectares with total production of 2,123.8 thousand tonnes, The corresponding area in Himachal Pradesh was 32.2 thousand.hectares with production being 2.8 thousand tonnes (Anonymous, 1989).
