Description |
French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important leguminous crops having its origin in South Mexico and Central America (Vavilov, 1951) and presently cultivated the world over. It has gained increasing popularity due to its quality proteins and nutritional balance besides certain medicinal properties which results in higher biological efficiency. The dry seeds are highly nutritious containing about 25 per cent protein, 50 per cent starch, 2 per cent fat and 3 per cent minerals. It occupies an important position among various kharif pulses and vegetable crops grown in temperate hills of India at an altitude ranging from 900-2500 m above mean sea level (Sharma and Sohi, 1989).
