Description |
Turnip {Brassica rapa £,.), a member of family Brassicaceae (Cruciferae), is an important vegetable crop grown throughout the year in one or other parts of the country. The history of turnip predates human civilisation. It is believed to have originated from Central and Western China, Middle Asia and the Mediterranean region (Choudhary, 1978). It forms an important dietary component in human food either as raw salad or cooked vegetable. Each 100 g edible portion of root contains 41.6 per cent moisture, 6.2 g carbohydrates, 0.5 g protein, 0.2 g fat, 43 mg ascorbic acid, 30 mg calcium 40 mg phosphorus, 0.4 mg iron and 1.5669 I.U. vitamin A (Chatfield, 1949).
