Description |
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is the major fruit crop of India and is successfully grown in almost all the states including Himachal Pradesh. With an annual mango fruit production of 10.8 million tonnes, India accounts for about 50 per cent of the total world production (Anon., 1997a). In Himachal Pradesh, mango crop occupies an area of 26,308 hectares which accounts for 14 per cent of the total area under fruit crops. This crop is successfully grown in low-hill subtropical areas of Kangra, Mandi, Una, Sirmour, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts. Mango is extensively grown in Kangra district which accounts for more than 50 per cent of the total mango fruit production in the state (Anonymous, 1997b)
