Description The fruit flies of the family Tephritidae are well known pests of vegetable and fruit crops throughout the world. Their attack not only reduces the yield but also affects the quality of the vegetables and fruits as a result of which the commercial value of the crop is reduced and the industry is rendered unprofitable. The flies attack a wide variety of vegetable and fruit hosts, however, the extent of infestation may vary in different hosts. In most tropical and sub-tropical countries, it is impossible to grow vegetables like cucurbits, tomatoes and fruits like mango, guava and peach etc. free from infestation by fruit flies (Narayanan and Batra, 1960; Bateman, 1972).
