Contribution of fruits to nutritional security and, hence, to the National Food Security is unique. It is, therefore, important to enhance fruit production during the next decade. The area under fruit crop in India is expected to go up substantially from 3.89 m ha in 2000 to 5.15 m ha in 2010. A four fold increase in productivity of fruits is necessary to meet the expected fruit requirement of 109 m tonnes in 2010 as the area under fruit can not go on increasing.
