Description |
The genus Acacia Mill, belonging to family Fabaceae, sub-family Mimosoidae is a very large genus of about 800 species of trees, shrubs and climbers (Tiwari, 1995). It is most abundant in Australia and Africa; but also found in the other warmer and drier regions of the Old and New Worlds. In India, there are 22 indigenous species, distributed through out the plains. These are mostly thorny trees or shrubs, a few are climbers. They are found mostly in the dry and arid regions, in dry deciduous and tropical thorn forests. Apart from this six species namely, A. mearnsii, A. decurrens, A. dealbafa, A. ruehnoxylon, A. pycnantha and A. auricuUformis have been introduced and are also common (Troup, 1921). A. catechu is one of the indigenous species which is distributed widely throughout the greater part of India except the most humid, cold and the driest regions.
