Description The frequent and fast changes in cropping pattern and agro-ecosystem, highly polyphagousness and cosmopolitan feeding nature have made Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Noctuidae : Lepidoptera) a global problem. The importance of this insect as a pest is magnified due to its direct attack on fruiting structures, high mobility, voracious feeding, high fecundity, multivoltine and overlapping generations, nocturnal behaviour, facultative diapause, migration and host selection by learning (Fitt, 1989; Cunningham et ai, 1989; Pawar, 1998; Sarode, 1999). In recent years it has assumed such a serious proportion in India that for the past one decade farmers and plant protection community have been virtually driven mad by this monstrous pest, creating an array of social, economical and political problems leading to several suicidal deaths in 1987 and 1997 in Andhra Pradesh and the year 1997-98 was turned into "Helicoverpa year" adding to misery of farmers. This dynamic insect-pest has gained several names in India viz., "The Big boss", "a dreaded powerful pest" and "suicidal pest" and causes enormous losses to several crops like cotton, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables etc. It is estimated that the crops worth Rs.2000 crores are lost annually inspite of the use of insecticidal chemicals worth about Rs.500 crore (Pawar, 1998).
