Description |
Out of the five major food groups; cereals and pulses, fruits and vegetables, milk and milk products, nuts and oilseeds, and meat products, the fruits play an important and crucial role in the normal health and well being of homosapiens. Fruit basically defined as mature ovary, thyllamus or part thereof also accounts for the national and international economy of the world. Not too distant in the past, the vegetables formed another significant constituent of "Horticulture," which primarily constituted flower, leaf, stem, root or any other segment other than ovary, thyllamus apart thereof. However, of late, the fruits and vegetables have been parted into Pomology (Horticulture) and Olericulture (vegetables). The fruits have got a great deal of relevance to the human nutrition, primarily as a source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants substances and above all, a delicacy or taste. Their consumption has been linked to a decreased incidence of cancer throughout the gastrointestinal tract, the female reproductive system, prostate glands and the lungs (WHO, 1990), due to antioxidant substances, which prevent or help to repair damage to the body of free radicals. Cancer and coronary heart diseases can both be triggered by oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
