Description |
The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa Chev) is a vigorous, climbing, deciduous vine, indigenous to the mountainuous regions of central and south-western China. In China, the kiwifruit has been known by a variety of names, but mihoutao has been used most commonly from about the beginning of the Tang dynasty. The name yangtao also was widely used, particularly along the Yangtze river. Chinese gooseberry was a name in common usage in New Zealand and elsewhere until the first export of this fruit to the United States in 1959. The exporting firm from New Zealand coined the name kiwifruit, the kiwi (Apteryx aastralis) being a flightless bird, which is the national emblem of New Zealand. The kiwifruit has gained enormous popularity in the past four decades in many countries of the world. The kiwifruit is mainly grown in New Zealand followed by China, U.S.A., Japan, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Australia and South Africa. The area under this crop in the world has been estimated to be over 53,000 ha and its production was 9,61,951 metric tonnes during the year 2000 (FAO, 2000). New Zealand aione accounts for over 70 per cent of world kiwifruit trade and currently exports its product to more than thirty countries.
