Description |
India is predominantly an agricultural country, where livestock production and agriculture are closely associated w,ith each other. India has about 15% cattle; 53.3% buffaloes; 20% goats; 5% sheep and about 1% pigs of world livestock population (Prashad, 1997). This huge population of livestock requires around 85 million tonnes of concentrate feeds, 600 million tonnes of green fodder and around 400 million tonnes of dry forages (roughages). The deficiencies of concentrate feeds, green fodders and dry forages are estimated to be 47, 25 and 40 per cent, respectively. In a present scenario, this deficiency is expected to be worse in future and probably no food grain can be spared for the feeding of livestock due to the ever-growing human population.
