Description |
The advancement of knowledge has identified commercial uses of almost all tree species. Acacias are known for their extractive compounds especially tannins and Acacia catechu< Willd. (khair) is exploited for its extractive products i.e. katha and cutch which possess extensive industrial uses. It belongs to the family Mimosaceae and its three varieties were identified as catechu, catechuoides and sundra, which are variably distributed in different regions of India. Acacia catechu var. catechu grows abundantly in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (Kumaon and Garhwal), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu region (Anonymous, 1983).
