Description |
After gaining independence from the British rule in 1947, India put forth its first step towards self-reliance and development. It adopted a parliamentary form of government based upon universal adult franchise. Today, India is the largest democracy in the World. It has pursued the path of planned development with a mixed economy providing unequivocal opportunities to both the public and private sectors to serve and grow within the broad framework of national interests and priorities. Notable advances in agriculture, industry, science and technology have taken place, with a result of our own trained manpower in the field of science and technology second to none. It has also made substantial progress in exploration of space and many other fields. India has the capacity and knowhow to maintain nuclear options and has opted to use nuclear energy only for peaceful purposes.
