Description |
Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the few ancient domesticated crops grown through out the world. It is used as a fresh, frozen or canned vegetable as well as a pulse crop. Pea contains high percentage of digestible proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, minerals and vitamins (Cherian et al., 1955). In India, it is cultivated over an area of 200000 hectares with total production of 2000000 Mt. (FAO, 1998) whereas in Himachal Pradesh, it is grown on an area of about 7956 hectares both main as well as off-season crop with annual production of 81011 Mt. (Anonymous, 1998). Owing to diverse agroclimatic conditions in the state, pea crop is grown throughout the year yielding lucrative returns to the growers of especially those high altitude areas where it is grown as an off-season crop.
