Description |
Okra (Abelmochus esculentus (L.) Moench 2n = 2x = 130) is an important fast growing warm season fruit vegetable of tropics and subtropics. It is believed to have originated in the Hindustani Centre of Origin, chiefly India, Pakistan and Burma (Zeven and Zhukovsky, 1975). It is grown primarily for its immature green fruits which are used in various ways such as cooked vegetable (boiled or fried), in soups and curries. The root and stem are useful for clearing cane juice in the preparation of jaggery (Chauhan, 1972).
